ABOUT .925 STERLING SILVER PLATED RHODIUM

.925 sterling silver, also known as sterling silver, is one of the world’s most popular jewelry metals, and it is often sold in high-end jewelry stores along with gold, platinum, and other precious metals.

Sterling silver is obtained by alloying .999 silver, or pure silver, with small quantities of copper, usually around 7.5 percent, to improve its durability. Unlike brass and nickel, .925 sterling silver is more hard-wearing and preserves its color, luster, and heft for much longer, with the added bonus that its value increases over time.

THE BEAUTY OF RHODIUM

Sterling silver tends to tarnish over time. To prevent the tarnishing process, rhodium plating is used.

Rhodium, a member of the platinum group of metals, boasts highly reflective qualities and a significantly stronger composition compared to gold. In addition to enhancing the durability of sterling silver jewelry, rhodium plating also increases its luster and light reflection, prevents scratches, and ensures it stays tarnish-free for longer. Moreover, rhodium plating prevents potential allergic reactions to sterling silver, making it safe to wear for everyone.

ABOUT 18K PLATED GOLD

All Mystigrey gold-plated jewelry is plated with 18K gold.

In its pure form, gold is extremely soft and malleable, and thus unsuitable for jewelry-making. In order to create jewelry that stands up well to daily wear, gold is alloyed with other metals to increase its strength and resistance.

Karat, abbreviated ‘K’, is used to indicate the percentage of gold in gold jewelry. The higher the percentage of gold, the higher quality the jewelry will be.

14K gold contains 58% gold and 42% alloyed metals, 18K gold contains 75% gold.

18K gold has a deeper yellow tone compared to 14K gold.

ABOUT STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel is one of the strongest metals used in jewelry-making. It is usually distinguished by its silver sheen and excellent durability, which make it ideal for those with very active lifestyles, such as athletes and gym-goers.

Steel contains carbon, nickel and chromium. For it to be considered stainless, at least 12 percent chromium must be present in its composition. Chromium adds an invisible top layer that prevents rust and corrosion; as such, stainless steel jewelry will not rust or tarnish.

Stainless steel jewelry is significantly more durable than sterling silver or gold jewelry, which means it can withstand more tear and wear, making it highly appropriate for athletes and people who lead very active lifestyles. It also requires little maintenance, and as the nickel in stainless steel is tightly bound and won’t leak out, therefore making it safe for those with metal allergies, too.
